Tips for Cord-Cutting

At-home entertainment used to mean paying your monthly cable bill, but with the explosion of streaming services, consumers now have more options. Some households will take a blended approach to traditional cable and streaming services, while others have opted to cut the cord entirely and are now streaming the latest binge-worthy shows, live TV, and more.

According to a recent study, 78% of all U.S. households have at least one subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) service, which has steadily increased over the years. To help you sort through all the options and extend your dollar without missing the latest must-watch list, we’ve put together these cord-cutting tips.

Family Plans.

When possible, take advantage of plans that allow for multiple devices to stream at the same time. Like Netflix and Hulu, most streaming services will let you create a unique profile to customize your watching preferences while sharing the cost with friends or family. If streaming music tops your list, audio apps—such as Spotify—allow you to share an account with up to 6 people.

Maximize Free Trials.

Most major streaming providers will allow you to try before you buy. This is an excellent option if you’re unsure whether the service offers content that fits your viewing taste. Or, if you’re looking for a specific TV series or movie, you could use the free trial period to binge-watch.

Just remember to set a cancellation reminder. Otherwise, you could end up with several monthly charges for streaming services you may or may not be using. If you’re unsure if you remembered to cancel after a free trial, you can quickly review your accounts for any monthly charges. This is also a great way to drop services you don’t use to help trim your monthly budget.

Choose Nonpremium Plans.

For a few extra bucks each month, many streaming services will offer a commercial-free plan or 4K streaming. Initially, this might sound great, but before making your selection, weigh your options and determine if the extra cost is worth it.

Let’s be honest, no one really loves sitting through commercials (except maybe during the Super Bowl), but the extra cost to skip them adds up. If your goal is to save money, sitting through a few commercials may not be that bad after all. Also, if most of your streaming is done on a device or TV that doesn’t support 4K, you might be better off choosing a lower-cost plan.

Whether you cut the cord completely or not, take advantage of the points you’ll earn by setting up an auto payment to your Visa® Platinum CashBack Plus Credit Card.
