Missing a Package?

The holiday season is filled with fun, family, and gifts! And for some, shopping for the perfect present is more enjoyable than receiving a gift. There has been a noticeable shift in online shopping, moving from being a convenience to a necessity. As we head into the gift-giving season, the number of packages dropped on doorsteps is expected to rise even more, which means an increased risk of losing a package to a porch pirate.

Porch pirates will cruise around neighborhoods looking for packages they can quickly and easily snatch. Based on a survey conducted in 2019, 31% of American consumers reported having at least one package stolen during the holiday season. Packages are often stolen during the day when people are away from their home, so using these tips could help protect you this holiday season.

Ship it elsewhere. Many Americans are working from home, but if you aren’t, consider shipping your package elsewhere. Do you have a trusted friend or neighbor who can receive your package, or does your employer allow you to send it to your work address? These are great options to consider when placing online orders. Other possibilities include requesting a pickup from a retail store location or using a package locker, like Amazon.

Signature required. Needing to sign for a package may be an inconvenience—especially if delivery time is unpredictable—but taking this extra step guarantees your package won’t be left at your doorstep when you aren’t home. If you request a signature to release the box and protocols aren’t followed, the delivery company could be held liable for the lost or stolen package.

Download the app. Many retailers have the option to track your package in their app or allow you to opt-in for app, text, or email alerts. Tracking your package is important because once it is marked as ‘delivered,’ that package’s responsibility shifts to you.

Upgrade security. Adding a camera to your front door could provide added security and peace of mind. There are several excellent options, including cameras that are integrated into your doorbell. Many services even offer apps that will help you to monitor and receive alerts.
